Day-2 Report of Shiksha Saptah Celebration: Foundational Literacy and Numeracy

Theme: Foundational Literacy and Numeracy
On the second day of the Shiksha Saptah celebration, St. Anselm’s Sr. Sec. School, Aburoad, focused on enhancing foundational literacy and numeracy skills among students. The day’s activities were meticulously designed and conducted grade-wise to ensure age-appropriate learning and engagement, fostering an environment where students could thrive academically and enjoy the process of learning.
Class I-II
Activities:
1. Abacus Fun with Numbers:
Students participated in a hands-on abacus activity that was both engaging and educational. The use of colorful beads made learning basic arithmetic operations, such as addition and subtraction, a fun and interactive experience, helping to solidify their understanding of numerical concepts.
2. Communicative English - LSRW and Vocabulary:
This activity focused on improving the four essential skills of language learning: Listening, Speaking, Reading, and Writing (LSRW). Through a variety of enjoyable exercises, students enhanced their vocabulary and language skills. Activities included word games, picture-based word identification, and interactive storytelling sessions, which not only made learning fun but also encouraged active participation.
Class III-V
Activities:
1. Reading Comprehension:
Students were given short stories and passages to read, followed by comprehension questions. This activity aimed to improve their reading skills and deepen their understanding of texts, fostering a love for reading and critical thinking.
2. Word Power and Vocabulary Skills:
To build a robust vocabulary, students engaged in word puzzles, synonyms and antonyms games, and vocabulary quizzes. These activities were designed to make learning new words enjoyable and effective.
3. Monologue:
Each student prepared and presented a short monologue. This activity helped in enhancing their speaking skills, boosting confidence, and encouraging them to express their thoughts clearly and creatively.
4. Adjective Related Activity:
Through interactive games and exercises, students learned about adjectives and their effective use in sentences. Activities included tasks like ‘Describe the Picture,’ where students used adjectives to describe various images, making learning descriptive language both fun and practical.
Class VI-VIII
Activity:
1. Vedic Mathematics:
An expert from Googolplex Edu. Company conducted a session on Vedic Mathematics, introducing students to quick and efficient methods for performing arithmetic calculations. These techniques not only accelerated their mathematical abilities but also stimulated cognitive development and enhanced overall mathematical understanding.
Class IX-X
Activities:
1. Story Writing & Storytelling Competition (Class 10):
In a preliminary round, each section of Class 10 participated in a story writing competition. The best four students from each section were selected for the final round of the storytelling competition. This activity encouraged creativity, narrative skills, and expression among students, providing them with a platform to showcase their talents.
2. Chart-Based Activity and Experiential Learning (Class 9):
Students engaged in creating charts and models related to solid 3-D shapes. They worked on calculating the surface area and volumes of these shapes, promoting experiential learning and a practical understanding of geometric concepts. This hands-on approach made complex mathematical ideas more accessible and enjoyable.
Class XI-XII
Activity:
1. Seminar on NEP, Education, and FLN:
A comprehensive seminar was conducted for senior students to provide insights into the National Education Policy (NEP), the importance of education, literacy, and foundational literacy and numeracy (FLN). The seminar aimed to educate students about the latest educational reforms and the significance of strong foundational skills in their academic and professional lives. This session was enlightening and motivated students to appreciate the broader aspects of education and its impact on their future.
The activities on the second day of Shiksha Saptah were highly successful, with students and teachers displaying great enthusiasm and engagement. The diverse and thoughtfully planned activities not only enhanced foundational literacy and numeracy skills but also encouraged a love for learning. The day’s theme was effectively implemented, contributing to the holistic development of the students and aligning with the overarching goals of the Shiksha Saptah celebration.
